I'm not one who usually talks about sports... But RIT just made it into the Frozen Four! :D This is big. One might say, hyuuuuuge.

For those who aren't RIT students, let me explain. RIT only has one sport that matters on campus. That sport is hockey. Specifically, men's hockey. In 2005, the men's hockey team (the RIT Tigers) jumped from Division III (blah division) to Division I (where all the good teams play.) 2010 is the first year RIT's been able to "play with the big boys" from across the country. And, so far, they've been kicking ass. No one (aside from RIT fans) was expecting this. The best ranked teams have been beaten by RIT already. There are only 2 more games between RIT and being the top college hockey team in the US. Considering RIT was ranked 15th out of the 16 teams, and it was their first time ever playing for the championship... The Tigers are doing pretty damn good.

I'm so glad I got my nephew an RIT Tigers jersey now. :)

1:06 pm - been awhile.
I think if I manage to pass all my spring classes, I will be 3-4 credits away from graduating. Which means I will be graduating late. By one open elective. WTF mate. >_o

Every week has been a test this quarter. I've been trying to get to bed early every night but it's been foiled by group projects. These group projects have to meet at 10PM because no one's schedules match otherwise.
I have very little hope for the future if the people in my class are going to be tomorrow's graphic designers. Yes, they can design well, but they're far from the brightest. I know I'm airheaded, but the extent of it in my major is frightening. Also, it gets annoying to hear "like" so much in presentations.

Club's been kicking my ass lately. I don't have too much work to do if we go strictly by the constitution, but other things that aren't assigned to specific people pile up and Tora-Con's been picking up pace. At least I have an assistant now. :D We still have open staff positions if anyone's interested.

2:18 am - Food post

I should be posting every day, but things haven't been so great in the kitchen lately. I woke up on Wednesday and went to the kitchen to make eggs, and there were over a dozen yellow jackets on the window over the sink. Turns out there's a nest in the chicken coop (don't ask) and by the front door (which we had known about.) We still have a mass grave of yellow jackets in the kitchen, but the nests have been sprayed so hopefully no more will come inside.
/end excuse for not cooking

Since Sam is doing her own diet journal, I'm going to do something similar. Because I'm lazy I'm going to keep the updates on this journal. I have a nice little camera, so what could go wrong with taking photos of each meal I make/eat? It should keep me honest and conscious about what I eat. If possible and wise, I'll include a recipe or a link to it.

Short version: I'm going to spam you with photos of food.

Okay, so, cleaning out things in Mike's place. There's a good reason that security deposits are used, and part of that is so that people don't leave the place trashed when they leave for good. That didn't happen here. That, and the place has been occupied for years without break that I know of.

In order to find a place to put our cereal, we went through one of the cabinets to toss out the stuff from the people who left. I had never seen someone go to that cabinet to take anything out in all my time at the place, and that's a lot of time. Turns out that all of it was out of date. Not a few months out of date. Oh, no. We found 2007s and even a box of tea that had an expiration date from 2005 in there. The tea had never been opened. Also went through the rest of the cabinets after that and they went from full to pretty much empty aside from the stuff Mike owns (all within date thank you.)

The only things I really kept were some teas (had lots of kinds but most were oooold), coffees and hot chocolate that did not have expiration dates on them. Lots of the coffee bags look like they've barely been touched, but since I don't have anything to filter it with, I decided to try the hot chocolate. Godiva brand mocha mix, or something. Went to try the Godiva milk chocolate mix, but it has never been opened. Seriously, the seal hasn't been broken.

I can understand not being able to finish foods that expire quickly, but dried and canned goods? Really? That shit takes years to go off. >_<

At least I have some nice things to drink for a little while.

Also have nice things to use! They left the rice maker, electric kettle, and toaster here. Sure, they left them in not-the-best-condition (not cleaned since the last time they cooked rice 2 months ago, bug in the kettle, etc) but they left them and now they are not so bad looking when the counter and the appliances themselves are clean.

Also, I'm going back to NJ on Sunday! I'll be there until August 11, probably.

5:25 pm - one more year.
I hate coming home. I'm always a disappointment. I can't do anything right. Going to school for graphic design was a mistake. I'm too smart for it. I should be able to do everything by myself already. Nevermind that I want to know how APR affects me, just sign up for a fucking credit card regardless of consequences. Of course my sisters and brother never gave them such trouble.

Why can't I leave already? This was a fucking trick.

I am now 21? Too bad this is the second birthday in a row I've had a cold.

Got a new fish tank yesterday with Becky. Some graduate girl from our school posted on craigslist that she would sell her entire set up tank and supplies for $20, and we could not pass that up. The entire package was probably worth over $90. But such a dirty and overstocked tank! When the guys walked past it they mentioned it stank of pond and death. Spent the better part of yesterday cleaning it and we managed to remove the smell and a lot of the floating debris. We added live plants today in place of the bamboo it came with. It doesn't look as nice as our established tank, but that may come with time.
The tank came with: 4 black/black skirt/black widow tetras, a male black molly, the biggest female balloon belly molly we've ever seen (seriously, it's a sea cow), a male swordtail, a little catfish/algae eater, an upside down catfish, and a candy stripe pleco. We're probably going to move at least the little catfish into our nice aquarium, and possibly another fish in the future depending on how this new tank turns out. The female molly is seriously like a goldfish in terms of size, approximate intelligence and pooping habits.

So uh... I should mention I'm coming back to NJ within the next week to pick up the car, but I'm going to be spending the majority of my summer up in Rochester. There will be a two week period where I'll be in NJ to take care of Farrie, but that's sometime in July.

I've come to a realization.

My major does not teach many things that would be necessary or good to know in the field I would chose to be in. Out of 8 senior level classes, there are about 2 that would deal with computer work. The rest are marketing/editorial/packaging work.

Advising office suggests I stay in graphic design, finish my degree and learn this extra stuff on my own. Because the major I would want to switch into has a lot of the same stuff as graphic design, I shouldn't switch.

Um, what? So, my senior year, I will be completing classes I dislike, working on portfolio stuff, and learning the things I might actually need to know to get a job. I thought classes were supposed to teach me what I need to know to get a job.

Also, I hate 3D work.

Gonna go talk to the head of the school of design. maybe she has some words of advice.

1:49 am - there's a joke here.
Just bathed Garfield. He was amazingly docile but completely freaked out and the same time. Did try to escape once or twice but I bare no scratches from that. He shed a lot too. The last people who had him kind of didn't take care of his fur. But now he's got pretty soft mat-free fur!

Oh cat, you must hate me right now.

1:07 am - Year 3, Quarter 2, Week 10.
It's week 10. We found a replacement for the apartment next year. I have a flash website entirely due next Friday and she hasn't even reviewed the design yet for it. On the lighter side, I also got 12 anime DVDs from rightstuf for about $4-6 each. It completes my collections of Mushi-Shi and School Rumble, and I got almost all of Ghost Stories while I was at it. I'm going to need a bookshelf dedicated to this soon. : (

Also, I really hate to pimp this out again but..

Be the Ultimate Ninja! Play Billy Vs. SNAKEMAN today!

Come on, guys. Don't you have any spare time in the day to hop online and play a Naruto/anime parody game? : ) It's not a life eater like WoW and it's entirely web based. *psst join eternal village*

7:01 pm - oh thank god.
the jackass is moving out. granted, he did not tell two of his roommates this (one of those is me), and told one less than 24 hours beforehand, but he's got a lot of his stuff out. his mother, the person he got most of his personality from, was here too, and she's quite a pain to deal with. at least he signed the paper so he's not coming back in fall.

His new roommates/moving helpers kept saying "nick you have too much stuff" and his reply was "You're going to college; I'm living here." I don't think he realizes the value of earned things, inherited things, and living sparsely because, well, you're a college student. He'd rather have an IKEA picture up than a handmade piece made by friends.

they didn't seem to think things through as they were leaving. since he took the only light source in the living room, we have the christmas lights and mini tree up. The vacuum was one of the first things packed. Since he whisked Becky's away to Connecticut, we're borrowing the frat boy neighbour's dust devil. we're going to have a clean apartment! also very empty. but not a bad thing. : )

11:58 pm - "oh god, this thing is 4 hours long? fuck this."
So here I am, drinking alone at my laptop when there's a Battlestar Galactica mini marathon going on downstairs. is it weird that I'm happy?

also happy that the dishes they made are mostly not mine to clean. oh thank god. even though nick used one of my new cookie sheets for his goddamned hellborn bacon creation. I should go clean that before the grease sets in.

So Becky and I go upstairs to insulate our bedroom window. 10 minutes later I come downstairs to find that while downstairs smells like cat poop, I can't find it. Turns out that the cat went out of the way to go to the back window, by the plants, to shit. He's only gone over there maybe once since he's started living here. He shat on the carpet, the undertable carpet, and the end Becky's long coat. Not regular cat poop, oh no. Diarrhea.

Kitty's probably not going to live here too much longer while he's on his meds. Gonna see if Leslie (his "official" owner according to the vets) will take him into her inn room.

Gooood it smells like shit here ;_;

2:09 am - Say hello to my little friend
look familiar?Collapse )

So now we have Garfield, the local stray, living with us. Or more accurately, on the main floor, mostly in the lower bathroom. He weighed five and three-quarter pounds when we took him in last Thursday. Today he weighed in at over 7 pounds.
According to the vets, he's a year or two old, not neutered, and FELV+. Currently has a broken hind leg, a stomach abscess, and pneumonia, and taking one antibiotic for all of it. Improving every day!

Luckiest kitty ever.

2:20 pm - My own fault
Made a stupid mistake and got a trojan. It feels like this xkcd comic. A simple removal becomes a reformat. Now we can't get it to boot Windows XP... I may have recieved a restore and recovery disc with the laptop but I can't find it... Since we have chaos at the house here I doubt I'd be able to find it until everyone leaves. I had a separate recovery partition for such an occasion but we can't find it. Seriously. wtf? It's on my harddrive! How can we not find it? It's entirely possible that the idiots I let reformat it last time got rid of that partition. And I don't think the install discs are working either.

At least I have an Ubuntu disc if all else fails.

EDIT: I go to sleep and come back hours later to my brother-in-law playing WoW on this laptop. Turns out it got to the point where dad thought he'd have to get me a new computer. However, the situation turned around at some point and he got the hard drive working again. Apparently he tried something called malwarebytes and that fixed everything to do with the trojan as well. So I don't have to reformat after all! Sweet, adobe suite saved.

2:38 pm - new schedule!
http://schedule.csh.rit.edu/?s=XgK2152
Finally found a studio I could take... 2 credits worth of ceramics. In total, 4 credits of studio this quarter, 7 of history (4 liberal arts history, 3 art history) and 6 credits of my core. The studios are there to buffer me in case I decide to drop one of the histories.

It's going to be hard to get up on Monday.

So I had drinks with some players Friday night... And started playing Saturday night because I wanted to know what they were talking about. Interesting.

3:06 am - Hard to reach
My phone has been out of my hands since Sunday night, and on Monday Farrie (my dog) had some sort of accident. Mom says she must have fallen down the stairs or something, and that her left side wasn't working so well. They thought she was having a stroke, but thankfully it wasn't that bad. She didn't break anything, but they have to carry her down the stairs in case she gets too excited (as she usually does) and rushes downstairs. There were other complications that arose, but most seem to be related to the (possibly antiswelling) medication she's taking.

I know she turned 9 just a week or two ago, but... This is a little soon, isn't it? Hopefully it's just temporary and by the time I get back home, she's better and a little wiser.

9:51 am - All nighter.
Oh man
Cruxshadows concert last night was AWESOME
Some dancing guy in the audience told me to be happy a few times (I missed all but his last successful try, becky filled me in later.) Being told to smile at a goth concert? That's my kind of place.
Turnout was a bit lacking, but we got to be pretty close to the stage because of that. I got their Wishfire CD and got it signed by Rogue (also a hug) afterwards. I'd have gotten the rest of the band to sign it, but they didn't actually work on that CD, so that might be awkward.

Stayed up all night to make chicken stock. The kitchen is now clean. Almost all the dishes and cups and such are now clean. I don't expect it to be that way when I return.

I think it's time we celebrate Festivus in this apartment. Now, where to find an aluminum pole...
